Monday 26th May 2025 was a wonderful day for the South African Sommelier Association (SASA), as we welcomed delegates from all over the world for a day of immersive wine experiences in the heart of Stellenbosch. The rain did not dampen our spirits at all - it added a cool, moody backdrop to a day full of warmth, laughter, and great wines. The ASI General Assembly Cape Town 2025, the first to be held on the African continent, gathered over 100 sommeliers, industry executives, and wine professionals at L'Avenir Wine Estate, providing a demonstration of the varietals, history, and innovation that define South African wine.

For more than 55 years, the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) has operated as the umbrella body for national sommelier associations on six continents, aiming to promote service standards and career options in the worldwide wine and hospitality business. SASA has been a big part of developing sommelier talent in Africa since South Africa joined this international network in 2015. It was an honour and a chance to host this assembly in Stellenbosch, where we could share our rich wine culture with people from all over the world.

The day was planned around four immersive stations, each led by one of our respected sponsor associations. These stations showed off the unique personality and quality of South African wine.

Pinotage - A Proudly South African Original

At the Pinotage station, hosted by the Pinotage Association of South Africa, delegates discovered the depth and diversity of this proudly South African varietal, tasting some of the country’s finest expressions. Pinotage, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, has grown into a versatile vine capable of producing everything from light, fruit-forward styles to robust, structured wines with long-term potential. The broad assortment on offer reflected the association's efforts to promote and safeguard this distinctive cultivar, which is currently experiencing a rebirth.

Chenin Blanc - South Africa's Signature White

South Africa remains the world's top producer of Chenin Blanc, and the Chenin Blanc station, presented by the Chenin Blanc Association, illustrated why this varietal has sparked global interest. Chenin Blanc ranges from crisp, mineral-laced expressions to creamy, oak-aged versions, illustrating the richness of our terroir. The Association promotes superior production and increased global reputation for Chenin Blanc, and the tastings demonstrated how far the varietal has progressed in recent years.

The Old Vine Project: Preserving Heritage

There’s a certain magic in older vines, and The Old Vine Project (OVP) honoured the legacy of South Africa's oldest vineyards with a station dedicated to wines manufactured from vines 35 years or older. The OVP aims to preserve these important plantings, ensuring their ongoing contribution to South Africa's wine story. Wines made in these old vineyards are famed for their depth, complexity, and sense of place, and delegates witnessed firsthand the enchantment contained in these bottles.

A Day to Celebrate and Connect

In addition to the tastings, guests got to enjoy a picturesque tractor ride through the vineyards, taking in the natural beauty and charm of Stellenbosch, which has long been known as South Africa's best wine region. A delicious, beautifully presented harvest table lunch followed, complete with seasonal local produce.

The day was filled with shared memories, new friendships, and a strong respect for South Africa's growing and changing wine culture. We raised a glass not only to our wines but also to the spirit of working together and being linked throughout the world through our love and appreciation of wine.
