1. Does SASA offer training courses?SASA does not teach training courses. SASA formulates and executes the exam that qualifies candidates as certified South African sommeliers.

2. Other wine education institutions such as WSET and the Cape Wine Academy (CWA) offer theory, tasting classes, and exams. Is it a sommelier qualification?The short answer is 'no.' Our fellow respected wine education institutions are excellent providers of comprehensive theoretical knowledge and as the examining body for sommelier courses in South Africa, SASA encourages exploring the various avenues to enriching educational classes that would support your journey and nourish your appetite for learning. SASA certification requires competency in both theory and practical wine service in order to pass the SASA exams.

3. Do I need to have done one exam before I can move on to the next?There are no prerequisites to do the exams, however, it is SASA’s recommendation there is a previous level of formalized experience or training. Each exam is stand-alone and no one exam is required before the next.

Do I need to be a working sommelier in order to do any of the SASA exams?It is not compulsory to be a working sommelier in order to do any of the SASA exams, however, an establishment where wine and food are served provides a deep wealth of experience. Through guest interaction, time management, essential soft skills, and the art of food and wine pairing, it is the recommended environment for learning and development in preparation for an SASA sommelier certification.
