Frequently Asked Questions
SASA does not teach training courses. SASA formulates and executes the exam that qualifies
candidates as certified South African sommeliers.
The short answer is 'no.' Our fellow respected wine education institutions are excellent providers of
comprehensive theoretical knowledge and as the examining body for sommelier courses in South
Africa, SASA encourages exploring the various avenues to enriching educational classes that would
support your journey and nourish your appetite for learning. SASA certification requires competency
in both theory and practical wine service in order to pass the SASA exams.
There are no prerequisites to do the exams, however, it is SASA’s recommendation there is a previous
level of formalized experience or training. Each exam is stand-alone and no one exam is required
before the next.
It is not compulsory to be a working sommelier in order to do any of the SASA exams, however, an
establishment where wine and food are served provides a deep wealth of experience. Through guest
interaction, time management, essential soft skills, and the art of food and wine pairing, it is the
recommended environment for learning and development in preparation for an SASA sommelier
certification.
The SASA exams are aimed at any person in the Wine & Hospitality industry with an authentic
appreciation for wine, practice responsible alcohol consumption, and are passionate about the wine
and hospitality industry, with the desire to pursue a career as a professional, certified sommelier
